My art is an expressive dialogue between the tangible and the intangible. I am interested in exploring a synthesis of representational, abstract, and ambient imagery as I seek to capture the essence of fleeting moments. Through the use of color, texture, line and composition, I aim to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity, inviting viewers to explore their own perceptions and emotions. My process is both intuitive and deliberate, blending spontaneity with attention to detail as I embrace experimentation and the unexpected. This approach keeps my practice dynamic and also ensures that each piece is unique and authentic. It is my hope that through my work, viewers find a moment of connection, reflection and a spark of inspiration.
Metascapes explore the transitional space between realism and abstraction where a dream-like inner meditative quality can emerge. I was initially inspired to create Metascapes many years ago after spending time in Baja California where I experienced a deep sense of stillness and expansiveness. I have also lived near the ocean for 40 years, so certainly on one level Metascapes may be viewed as seascapes, though they are not, as I paint without reference to any viewed or photographed scene. Conceptually, the horizon line may be perceived to be the illusionary boundary for what may be above or below the surface of one’s inner awareness.

Form and matter are in continuous transformation within the space they are understood. Everything changes, from the most complex body in nature to the smallest particle. It is energy that gives form to what is in princple shapeless yet a powerful form. Michael Baroff’s artistic investigation is exactly in this direction, particularly in the Space-Form-Energy relationship, where space is the place of action available for form/matter indentified by a synthesis in terms of lines and colors, inserting the randomness that is reflective of change and incidence. The result is an almost metaphysical study that passes through the space of interiority. - Frederica D’Avanzo, Art Curator, M.A.D.S. Gallery, Milan, Italy

Michael Baroff's Metascapes are reminiscent of the paintings of Mark Rothko and have a mystical and spiritual quality, to be appreciated in an intimate relationship between the image and viewer.

Cataract oil paintings (2024 - present) reflect the two meanings of “cataract”: a medical condition resulting in blurred vision; and a sudden rush of water
Space Form Energy oil/acrylic on paper monotypes combine intention and “first thought, best thought” spontaneity to reveal abstract organic forms. Selected original images are also digitally enhanced as prints.
My figurative work includes Expressive Figures (acrylic /graphite/ink on paper or canvas), which are drawn and painted from life and seek to interpret a model's pose, transcending the individual, to portray and evoke the viewer’s emotional engagement with the composition; also drawn from life, Dancing Gestures capture, in a second or two, the energy of free-form dancers in motion.
Ambient Photographs and Videos serendipitously record what attracts my attention while in public environments and can be viewed from a range of stylistic perspectives including abstract, scenic, narrative, meditative, satiric, or social commentary.
